Introducing Mogrify – Steph

Ever wanted to be a fly-on-the-wall of the Mogrify office? Now’s your chance. Mostly we’ve got our heads down working hard, but our blog series – Introducing Mogrify – gives us a chance to get up from our desks, answer a few questions and share a bit about what makes us tick.

Today we meet (fresh from her recent return from mat leave):

Stephanie (Steph) Vella, Senior Marketing Manager

How long have you been part of the Mogrify team?

I joined Mogrify in May 2019. I’ve just returned after a brief seven-month hiatus to have my second child – Pia. My mat leave was great, but I am thrilled to be back and to engage in slightly more stimulating conversation once again!

What is your role at Mogrify?

I’m one of the Senior Marketing Managers. My day-to-day work varies depending on our customers’ different goals. My role is to ensure we create and execute a marketing strategy aligned with these goals. I work closely with the client and our broader team throughout the journey to ensure the strategy is effective and optimised.

What Mogrify value do you align with the most?

“Say it, Do it”. I believe we should take responsibility for the good and the bad. As a marketing partner, we need be accountable for both our customers and for Mogrify. I think this aligns with my personality; I have always had a natural drive to be accountable. In my opinion, all of the Mogrify team think like this. It is what makes us work so well as a team and ensures good results for our clients and enables us to shift focus and pivot when needed.

What is your favourite thing about working at Mogrify?

We have a fab team culture. I think we’re all really invested in reaching goals, both for our customers and for Mogrify. It’s a bit cliched but I genuinely believe we are all committed to helping our clients and the business be the best they can be.

Also, I get to work with Francesca, and she is such an inspirational co-worker. It’s hard to put into words the impact she has had on me. She is quite simply amazing. ***

What made you choose Mogrify?

Having suffered a long commute for years, my first attraction was the location. It quickly became clear to me though that the Mogrify values really resonated with me. There is a lot of flexibility and growth opportunities. From the moment I joined, I have been encouraged to take ownership of my role but also to dig in when needed outside of this. It is great to work somewhere that my voice is heard, and my ideas welcomed.

What makes you get out of bed every day?

Did I mention I just came back from mat leave? My daughter is seven months old, so it’s not really up to me when I have to get out of bed!

How would you describe Mogrify?

Innovative and proactive. I think a lot of businesses can talk about innovation and ideas, but they take a long time to implement any actual change. Mogrify is different. We’re not a traditional agency and I think this allows us to be more nimble. When we see a better way of doing something, we do it.

I also think as a result of not being a traditional agency, we have much stronger, effective customer relationships. We become more ingrained with our clients and this allows us to get into the nitty gritty and really understand what makes them, and their customers, tick.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Keeping my houseplants alive. It’s no mean feat.

What do you think your expertise is?

I am told by my co-workers that I am very good at getting ‘shit done’. I have to admit, I thrive on seeing plans through from concept to completion. I find it really rewarding. I also think I am good at identifying opportunities outside of a plan, which helps ensure I get results for customers.

Tell us about your family.

My parents both come from a Maltese background, so I have a big family. I am one of five sisters. We like to conform to Maltese stereotypes of big family gatherings with far too much food! We never leave a catch up hungry!

What is something no one at Mogrify knows about you?

They know it now, but it was only recently the team discovered my cat’s name is Stephen. Apparently, this is hilarious.

What is one skill you wish you were better at?

I’m terrible at talking about myself.***

***Interviewer & editor agrees.

I’ve never been able to do a handstand or a cartwheel. I’ve added that to my New Year’s resolutions. My husband would probably wish for me to be better at packing the dishwasher!

What is the last movie you saw?

Not a movie but I just finished watching Bridgerton. I no longer walk, I promenade.

If you could visit anywhere in the world where would you go?

Right now, with COVID-19, I’m quite happy where I am. Post-pandemic though, I would love to travel around Italy.
